Durkheim s Study On Suicide During The Industrial Revolution

Feelings of isolation have been linked to higher suicide rates. Durkheim’s study on suicide during the industrial revolution supports this theory as he states that, â€Å"people were increasingly disconnected from their communities and that this social upheaval had a greater effect on suicide rates than other factors like wealth† (Winner Collishaw, 2011). Interestingly enough, despite the increase of media attention on suicide, no studies have been published that explain why suicide rates vary among different groups. However, various factors are involved in the decision to commit suicide. As a result, suicide rates vary according to race, gender and age. Suicide attempts are highest among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) females, followed by AI/AN males, and are lowest among African American and White adolescent males. Due to shame and the value placed on not looking weak in the African American community, some youth use less taboo ways of ending their lives. Wolf gang (1959) stated that, â€Å"victim-precipitated suicide is disproportionately represented among African American males.† For example, â€Å"In studies of officer-involved shootings, there appears to be evidence of suicidal intent in between 10% and 46% of cases† (Klinger, 2001). Therefore, due to cultural beliefs within the African American community, sometimes African Americans use victim-precipitated suicide as a more conventional way of ending their lives. Atomic Bomb On Hiroshima, By Wilfred Burchett - 896 Words

â€Å"When you arrive in Hiroshima, you can look around and for 25 and perhaps 30 square miles you can see hardly a building. It gives you an empty feeling in the stomach to see such man-made devastation† – Wilfred Burchett. That is a quote directly from Wilfred Burchett speaking of the damage that was left after the judgment call from President Harry Truman to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Today my assignment is to consider myself as President Truman at that time and settle on if I would have taken the same course of action as the commander and chief. Truman indeed faced an impracticable choice preceding his giving of the command to drop the bomb; either he could risk the lives of fifty percent of American soldiers or he could use the new found nuclear weapon on the people and cities of Japan. Most Americans have questioned the acts of President Truman back in those days, as a matter of fact those debates still carry on today; conversely today I try to put mys elf in his shoes to see if he was justified in his decision. . First I would like to look at some of the facts that led up to the pivotal verdict which caused so much destruction to Japan and its people. After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, the United States would engage in World War II against Japan. I truly don’t believe anyone believed that the war would last as long as it did; nevertheless, after 44 months of fighting, the American people were growing weary of the war and wanted their troops to come home. Argumentative Essay Topics For The Giver

Argumentative Essay Topics For The GiverOne of the most successful techniques in writing essays is arguing the case for your thesis. Writing arguments should be important to all writers, but this is one of the most difficult styles of writing and one that the giver can do well with. The more examples you provide the better. To use the argumentative essay techniques, the giver must determine which topic is most important to their thesis. It's okay to add topics but make sure that they fit within the topic they already know something about. If you are an English major and are writing about a topic of literature, then the best argumentative essay topics are the ones that deal with literature and writers. For other writing the best topics might be those that deal with cars or politics. These are the subjects that have proven to be effective at convincing others and have been proven successful in the past. The key to putting your topic into writing is not just writing, but reading your subj ect on a daily basis. You need to read books on this topic and watch movies and television shows that deal with this topic. The goal is to spend more time with your subject and learn more about it. Once you've done this you can begin to write in a more original and productive way. As an example, if you're writing about football, then you can begin to watch and read about the great players in the sport.Another method is to write opinion articles about the topic. This technique is used when the writer wants to come across as an expert on the topic they are writing about. Opinion pieces should be less opinionated and more factual. When your opinion article is purely factual then it allows you to discuss the facts of the subject in a factual manner.Another technique is to write academic journal articles about the topic. In these articles the article will first of all be written and then submitted to the academic journal, where it will then be edited by the editor. This method allows you to use your own opinions and experience as well as opinions and experiences from people you trust. As an example, if you are writing about the history of U.S. youth football you can try to find many letters, articles, and editorials written about the subject and then select the best ones to write. The best ones will be stories and memoirs of individuals who have either played the sport or worked as coaches. This type of essay is easier to write and certainly more compelling. Finally, the final approach for the argumentative essay topics for the giver is to write a creative book.
